Altausser See trip

The Ausseer Land hiking trail along the shores of Altausseer See, one of the most picturesque lakes in the Salzkammergut region of Styria, is a must for all nature lovers. Starting from the idyllic lakeside town of Altaussee, the hike allows you to explore the stunning scenery of the area. The town of Altaussee itself is a stunning sight, famous for its large, built-in porches and wooden chalets that are a distinctive feature of the town. With traces of its old salt mining past, it is now a peaceful resort.

The route follows the lakeshore, allowing you to admire the iconic peaks of the area from different perspectives. The emblematic giants of the Totes Gebirge (Dead Mountains), the 1,000-metre rock face of the Trisselwand and the famous Loser rock crag, are almost within reach. In the distance, the Dachstein glacier makes the panorama even more impressive.

The hike is 6.9 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours to complete, excluding stops. The total altitude difference is 120 metres, including ascents and descents. The trailhead is Altaussee, located between the Vivamayr Hotel Complex and the Seevilla Hotel at the southwestern tip of the lake, near the long pier.

Parking is also available, with the large pay car park in Fischerndorf or the Scheichlmühle car park on the main road being convenient starting points. It is important to note that there is a parking fee, but the scenery and the beauty of the surroundings will certainly compensate you.
